World Affairs Challenge

Program Category: Challenges & Competitions
Grades 6–12

Students work in teams with the help of an adult coach to research an aspect of the annual global theme and prepare for four dynamic events: formal presentation, discovery poster, global awareness quiz, and collaborative question. On Challenge Day, students come together to share their perspective on the annual theme with judges from the community.

Academic skills: Research, public speaking, teamwork, leadership, critical thinking and problem-solving

Fees and Deadlines: $150 per team of 5-12 students. Scholarships available (see below.)

World Affairs Challenge Scholarships Available!

The University of Minnesota’s Office for Public Engagement is offering ten scholarships to high-need public schools in the Twin Cities area to participate in Minnesota’s First Annual World Affairs Challenge™, an academic program and competition on international affairs for middle and high school students. Schools at which 50% or more of students receive free/reduced lunch are eligible for this scholarship, which covers the World Affairs Challenge™ registration fee for one team and provides up to $100 additional support for materials and transportation to the World Affairs Challenge on April 25, 2009 at Macalester College.
